Your creative career is not a straight line. It never was. In fact, it was never intended to be. Working in the creative arts means you’re at the knife’s edge of innovation, technology, human behaviour and cultural shifts. When you take all of this into consideration, it becomes almost unthinkable to study a 3-year diploma once and expect it to sustain you professionally over a 50-year career journey. Here’s what I have found differentiates the best from the rest when it comes to building a lifelong career that makes an impact and generates an income over time. They stay curious.Navigating a creative career requires embracing curiosity. Stay curious about emerging trends, tools, and perspectives in your field. They build their community.Building a community is vital for creative professionals. Your network can be a source of inspiration, feedback, and collaboration opportunities. They’re learning continuously.Continuous learning is a cornerstone for creative evolution. Keep honing your skills, adapt to new technologies, and embrace a growth mindset. They’re masters at collaboration.Mastering collaboration is essential for success in the creative realm. Cultivate the ability to work seamlessly with diverse teams to bring ideas to life. They connect authentically and sincerely.Authentic and sincere connections amplify the impact of your creative work. Build relationships based on genuine engagement and mutual respect. These are some of the principles I wish I knew and understood how to practically apply when I was 25 years old and developing my own creative voice.
