Authenticity Is The Most Underrated Creative Skill.

Hi Reader

Finding Your Voice As An Emerging Creative Pro

Being genuine is a powerful creative skill.

What truly matters is who you are, not just what you create.

Connecting with others through sincere and authentic communication is more important than being exceptionally original or highly productive.

Discovering your unique creative voice is the first step on a lifelong journey to realise your creative potential.

Recently, I had a fascinating conversation with Jan Hendrik Opperman, who leads the Creative Arts department at Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch. He focuses on film and theatre production, particularly for young individuals exploring their creative potential. Jan Hendrik is an experienced actor and producer, known for his work on the KKNK stages in Oudsthoorn and as Tony in the South African TV series “Suidooster.” He’s dedicated to empowering young people to develop their creative skills, whether in writing, performing, or producing. With a passion for the performing arts and a commitment to the next generation, Jan Hendrik is a key figure in shaping South Africa’s creative industries.

Last weekend, I had the honour of facilitating the Entrepreneur Indaba at the annual Mogale Festival in Pretoria. (Some photos here)

Both my conversation with Jan Hendrik and my interactions with experienced and budding creative professionals at the Indaba emphasised an undeniable truth:

Your greatest creative potential lies not in your technical skills but in your ability to understand yourself, communicate your value, and genuinely connect with others who share the same journey.

To a more authentic, connected you.
